What makes a fund manager stand out?

An LP's perspective

LinkedIn is a scary place for GPs right now.

There are an awful lot of “it’s a tough time to be a VC” posts floating around. Lots of chatter about LPs dollars funneling into mega funds, and the loneliness of being a solo GP.

But you know what I’m not seeing? I’m not seeing “here’s what you can do to attract more LPs in today’s world” posts.

And frankly, I think that stinks. Enough doom and gloom. Let’s bring back helpful, actionable content from subject matter experts.

And speaking of subject matter experts… meet Carson Monson.

Carson is a seasoned LP who has been finding and investing in fund managers for nearly a decade. He’s backed everything from micro funds to high-profile GPs spinning out of brand-name firms.

Yes, his background is impressive. He started out in the public markets, worked at a small seed fund, and eventually joined Greenspring Associates (now part of StepStone Group).

Then he went on to become the first Head of Private Equity & Venture Capital at SITFO, a $3.5 billion State Sovereign Wealth Fund.

The man’s LinkedIn reads like a finance major’s daydream.

But what I think is most impressive about Carson is his ability to spot breakout GPs. Sure, there’s DPI and TVPI to consider, but Carson knows what to look for – beyond the numbers – to identify the outliers.

And at Camp Hustle 2025, he’s going to share his insights.

Carson’s session at Camp Hustle is called Standing Out as an Emerging Manager – an LP's Perspective”. And it’s going to be a game-changer for anyone raising or thinking of raising a fund.

The session will cover (among other things):

  • Patterns Carson has seen across years of evaluating (and investing in) fund managers

  • Getting the attention of prospective LPs

  • The clues LPs are using to evaluate you as a fund manager

This session will be highly educational and actionable. We’re carving out time for Q&A, too, so bring your questions.

Camp Hustle tickets are available now → join us to meet Carson and set yourself (and your fund) up for success.

See you there,
